Ceramic Decal Printer

Humidity

  • Keep room humidity between 40-50% otherwise color shifts can occur
    • Lower humidity: undersaturated
    • Higher humidity: can damage components

Toner

  • Always keep 100 grams of toner–whole thing should always weigh more than 260 grams
    • Can only check toner levels manually
    • Need to refill ourselves–use funnel on spring loaded cap
    • ~ 1500 prints
    • Purchase new toner from Enduring Images

Developer

  • Developer may form into a clump / stick to blades and cause streaks
    1. Print diagnostic chart to identify which color has streak
    2. Clean laser lens using blue stick in each slot in the front of printer
    3. Take entire drum out, spin rightmost gear with 7/16” socket clockwise then counter clockwise
  • Developer and photoconductor units are consumable (5000-10000 prints)
    • Will know to replace when there is a loss of color density
    • Purchase photoconductors from Ricoh, will come with organic developer and will need to replace with ceramic developer (from Enduring Images)

Paper

  • Tray 1: 8.5x11”, tray 2: 11x17”, bypass tray on side for custom sizing
  • Can use any non-coated water slide decal paper

Digital

  • Printer uses ceramic CMYK colorspace
    • Hard to print teal & vibrant neon colors
    • Reds have too much yellow and tint orange

Photoshop

  • File → new then use color profile that Enduring Images sends to us after we give them test tiles (or use “US Web Coated V2”)
  • Do editing work in RGB and then change to CMYK right before printing
  • Edit / color settings → CMYK → photoshop 5 CMYK
  • Create selective color adjustment layer to correct for inaccuracy
    • remove some yellow from the red channel
    • remove yellow and add black to black channel
  • Photoshop print dialog
    • Color handling → photoshop manages colors
    • Printer profile → photoshop 5 comic (match printer profile to document profile)
    • Rendering intent → absolute colormetric

File → print driver configuration

  • Paper type → thick paper 4
  • Dithering → photographic
  • Color profile → photographic
  • Grey reproduction → black by grey
  • Resolution → 1200
  • Image smoothing → automatic
  • Check overprint on
  • Save as preset

Lamination

  • Set to 320°f
  • Yellow lays on top of printed image
  • Feed through and then peel off top layer before applying to ceramics

Firing

  • Need to find out firing temp, time, schedule
